When a search is made in the engines (such as Google) the results page will bring up a list of 10 websites that appear naturally, and then "sponsored links" either down the right hand side or in a grey box at the top. These "sponsored" companies are paying the search engine to be there, and this is called pay per click advertising, or Adwords.
First you choose the search terms you would like to appear for, such as "buy chocolate". Then you put in a bid for how much you are willing to spend every time someone clicks on your link, for example £0.80 If you have bid the highest you appear at the top, if you are the 2nd highest you are 2nd and so on. Every time someone clicks on your link however you pay the search engine (Google) a fee. You can choose to spend as much or as little as you like, and have as many search terms as you like.
A badly handled PPC campaign can result in a large spend of money with very little result. An example: if you were selling chocolate, and bid in a very high amount on the word "chocolate" you would be in 1st place when someone types 'chocolate' into Google. However, there are lots of people who type chocolate into the search engines that aren't looking to buy chocolate, but are just interested in it. You could end up having many visitors but no customers. Someone typing in "buy chocolate" on the other hand IS looking to buy – there are many companies competing on this search term so it would be quite costly to appear for it. The key is along side your main search terms, is to find the cheaper less used terms which bring customers but cost little, for example if you sell heart shaped chocolate the term "love chocolate", "chocolate hearts" would not only be cheaper because less people are bidding on them, but those people searching for "chocolate hearts" are actually looking for what you sell and are therefore more likely to become customers.
A good pay for click Management Company can make the difference between making money from your campaign, and giving your profit margin to Google in PPC fees.
